H. PYLORI SCREENING
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria which is commonly found in the stomach. H. pylori infection is strongly associated with chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers and an independent risk factor for gastric cancer and lymphoma of the stomach.
Exposure to this bacteria can be tested for via a blood test for H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG). Presence of this antibody suggests exposure to the bacteria.
The Urea Breath Test is a non-invasive test which is done on a patient’s breath to detect active Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. The test takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and involves providing 2 breath samples, separated by swallowing a pill.
Preparation for this test includes:
Fasting for at least 6 hours prior to the test
Avoiding smoking for at least 30min before the test is conducted
Antibiotics should be avoided for a month prior to the test
Gastric medication (such as proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole and Nexium) should be avoided for at least 2 weeks before the test.
Make an appointment to undergo testing for this common infection.
